Top 5 Books of 2014

2014 has been the year of reading for me. I read about 35 books and although I had hoped to read more, most of the books I read were fantastic, there were only a couple that I could not get through.  Out of the 35 I read about 20 of them were contemporary (I am a sucker for contemporary). I have also managed to read a bit of each genre and found myself opening up to different types of books. My book collection has grown quite a bit as well (to the point were I might need a new shelf). I did not read as many 2014 releases as I would have liked to but I am very happy with the books I read this year :)
I decided to narrow down my favorites of 2014 by just doing my top 5.

5. The distance between us & On the fence by Kasie West

Both of these books are short and fast-paced reads, I never felt like putting them down. I read "The distance between us" first and after I finished it I immediately picked up "On the fence". I was in love with the uniqueness of the characters and the character development from  the beginning of the book to the end. Not to mention the adorable covers look really good on my bookshelf.

4. My life next door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

This book is probably hands down one of my favorite contemporaries of all time. The romance in this book is great and all but, the characters are what really makes the book outstanding! There is an abundance of characters in MLND and each of them have totally different personalities and traits. I am looking forward to re-reading MLND in 2015.

3.  Penryn & The end of days by Susan Ee

I truly believe that Susan Ee does not get enough credit for writing these books. Both of these books are packed with action and adventure, they aren't too long so you can read them quite quickly. I love that the romance took a backseat in this story because it really helps with understanding their world. There have been many books that get overlooked for its true quality because of the relationships, but Susan's writing and creative skills really show through. If  I could recommend one book from the ones I read in 2014 it would be Penryn & the end of days. (I ship Raffe and Penryn so hard)

2. The Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi

Before I say anything can I just say that these are the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. I read Unravel Me and Ignite Me this year and Shatter Me in 2013 and although Shatter Me was really good it does not even compare to Unravel Me or Ignite Me. The main character Juliette was pretty frustrating in Shatter Me and most of Unravel Me, but once she broke through in the end of Unravel Me, the books seemed to have changed perspective. Mafi's writing is so incredibly beautiful, the way she describes Juliette's feelings and thoughts is truly out of this world.

1. The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The Lux series has a special place in my heart, I read all the books over the summer and it was a big part of my year. These books are so good I don't know where to start, first of all the humor in this series is fantastic. I love the characters so much and by the end of the series I felt more emotionally connected to these characters then I have with any other characters in a long time. I love the world that Jennifer has created. I look forward to reading more of Jennifer L. Armentrout in 2015.

Overall, I am really proud of myself for all that I did in 2014 and am looking forward to having an even better 2015!

Winter TBR 2014

I am so excited for winter break, because I can finally sit down and read without being interrupted by homework or other priorities, I have been reading a lot more since fall especially contemporary books. I am looking forward to snuggling in bed with a cup of hot chocolate and one of these books:

1. Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle

I am really looking forward to reading this book! It consists of three holiday short stories and sounds like the absolute perfect book for this time of year.

2. My True Love Gave to Me by Stephanie Perkins
Similar to Let It Snow this book is perfect for the season, it is written by some of my absolute favorite contemporary authors and has twelve short stories each one written by a different author.

3.  What I thought was true by Huntley Fitzpatrick
My Life next door is one of my all time favorite contemporary books, so naturally I was quite shocked that I hadn't read her second book, and although it is not technically a "winter read" I decided that I had put it off for to long!

4.  The Darkest Minds trilogy by Alexandra Bracken
I just finished the "Shatter Me" series and am having a terrible book hangover, plus I wanted to finish this series by the end of the year.

I personally also think that all these books would make excellent gifts!

Book review: The Distance Between us by Kasie West

Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

My Review:  *SPOILERS*

I absolutely adored this book! I went on a road trip during Thanksgiving break, and was going to be in the car for eight hours, so I figured I would pick up something to read. I wanted something light and not too long and I've had my eye on this book for a while. As soon as I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. Caymen meets Xander as soon as the book begins, which I really liked because we got maximum time to get to know the character and how they developed from the beginning of the book to the end.

I was surprised by how much my impression of Xander changed throughout the book. We see how Caymen's impression changes as well, Xander goes from the stuck-up rich boy to the sweet and caring boyfriend who weirdly enough has a lot in common with Caymen. Family and money are some of the main conflicts in the story, which is pretty typical for YA contemporary books but, I enjoyed Kasie's take on it and wasn't expecting Caymen's grandparents to be rich. I will say that the ending was a bit confusing I didn't quite understand how Xander knew about Caymen's grandparents and didn't speak to her about it before announcing it at the benefit  the whole situation just seemed awkward and forced. I loved the fact that we get to see the two main characters as an actual couple for a good portion of the book, most YA contemporary novels end before we even see them as a couple.

I enjoyed Caymen's "dry humor" and found it very relatable.

“So Caymen..."
"So, Xander..."
"Like the islands."
"What?"
"Your name. Caymen. Like the Cayman Islands. Is that your mom's favourite place to visit or something?"
"No, it's her third favourite place. I have an older brother named Paris and an older sister named Sydney."
"Wow." He opens the bag, takes out a muffin, and hands it to me. The top glistens with sprinkled sugar. "Really?"
I gently unwrap it. "No.”

I love that they both try and help each other figure out what they want to do with their life, because neither of them want to end up taking over their parent's businesses, although I would have liked a better and more put together ending, I did feel as that there were some loose strings that needed to be tied.

I found this book to be similar to "My Life Next Door" By Huntley Fitzpatrick even though I enjoyed MLND better.

Overall I would give this book a 90%, I enjoyed it very much and craved for more when it ended. I loved the dry humor in this book and think that Caymen and Xander are the cutest thing ever!

TV Talk: Reign

Synopsis:
Chronicles the rise to power of Mary Queen of Scots when she arrives in France as a 15-year-old, betrothed to Prince Francis, and with her four best friends as ladies-in-waiting. It details the secret history of survival at French Court amidst fierce foes and dark forces.

Network: CW

Where can you watch it: Netflix, Hulu plus, CW network

My review: spoiler free

I started watching Reign about a week ago on Netflix and the first couple episodes were alright but after episode 3 or 4 I was hooked. I wasn't expecting much going into it and expected it to be kind of boring if I am being honest, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much I liked the show. the show takes place during 1557 in France and most of the show takes place in the French court. For some of season 1 there is a Love triangle, I personally am not a huge fan of love triangles in books or in movies/TV shows, but this one was quite brief. I really love the mystical bits of the show like the darkness of the woods, the potions that Catherine is known for and the ghosts that roam the French court. When I started watching I was curious about the accuracy of the show and although it's not completely correct, it is somewhat accurate and does follow the general timeline and includes historic events such as the Plague and the conflict between Protestants and Catholics. So far season 2 is not as intriguing as season 1 was but I am enjoying it very much.

Reign comes on every Thursday at 9/8c

My rating: 87%

Book Review: World After by Susan Ee

World After by Susan Ee

Synopsis:
In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

*SPOILERS*
My review:

Much like Angelfall I loved this book just as much, maybe even more. This book is a little slower paced in comparison to the first book, but that allows the readers to slow down and understand the details of their world.
The book starts right where Angelfall left off, with Pen, her psychotic mother and her monstrous sister in the back of the resistance army truck. Picturing that scene in my head had me laughing so hard, I could easily see Pen's mom murmuring chants under her breath to her "dead" daughter and Paige giving every person who dared to stare at them a deadly a look.
I honestly expected the resistance camp to be different, I was shocked when they locked up Pen and her family in the cop's car, and the way they treated Paige was heartbreaking, I thought that they would have a much bigger part in this book.

By the end of this book we find out a lot about Paige and what happened to her. I got teary eyed reading about Beliel and Pagie, in a strange way I liked Beliel and Paige's relationship, although I hated the way he treated her, but I was hoping that Paige's selflessness would change Beliel into a better person. That being said I can't say that I did not enjoy Paige attacking Beliel. The fighting scene at the end had me a bit confused, is Paige somehow connected to the scorpion angels? and when the doctor had said that Paige was "very important", it kind of makes me wonder if Paige could be used as a weapon in the war. Part of me hated Penryn for looking at Paige like she was a monster and it broke my heart to think that Penryn couldn't even look at her in the eye.

Even though Raffe does not show up until the second half of the book, I never felt the absence of the male lead. There was enough action and content to keep us occupied until he showed up. We get some of his thoughts through his sword, these scenes were probably my favorite scenes in the book.

"Tell me about Raffe."
Nothing.
"okay. Let's practice fighting," I said in an enthusiastic voice as if I'm talking to a little kid. "I could use more lessons."
Nothing.
"Right. Well, I guess I have nothing better to do now than to decorate the teddy bear with ribbons and bows. What do you think of dusky pink?"
The room wavers, then morphs.”

We also learn so much more about the importance of angel swords, that is definitely visible through the last fighting scene in the book, I was surprised that Raffe's sword had so much power. I thought it was hilarious that Penryn named the sword "Pooky bear" and Raffe's reaction was priceless!

“He glares at me as if he already hates it. “What is it?” I consider lying but what’s the point? I clear my throat. “Pooky Bear"
He’s silent for so long I’m beginning to think he didn’t hear me when he finally says, “Pooky. Bear.” “It was just a little joke. I didn’t know.”
“I’ve mentioned that names have power, right? Do you realize that when she fights battles, she’s going to have to announce herself to the opposing sword? She’ll be forced to say something ridiculous like, ‘I am Pooky Bear, from an ancient line of archangel swords.’ Or, ‘Bow down to me, Pooky Bear, who has only two other equals in all the worlds.’ ” He shakes his head. “How is she going to get any respect?”

Raffe and Penryn's relationship definitely progressed since the last book. They briefly talk about it while they're at the beach house, but I love how slow developing their relationship is, its not love at first sight like most books, I really like that aspect of the book. But I love Raffe and Pen together, I think their chemistry is amazing and they think similarly although they didn't get along at first.

So is it worth reading the sequel? 100% yes!

Book Review: Angelfall by Susan Ee

Angelfall by Susan Ee

Where you can buy it: http://www.amazon.com/Angelfall-Penryn-End-Days-Book/dp/0761463275

My review:

Angelfall was one of those books that i could not put down. This was my second time reading this book...this year. I truly believe that this series does not get as much attention as it deserves. Susan Ee has such a unique writing style that really catches the readers attention. I love that this book isn't too long and you can read it in one day, I never felt like putting the book down for even a second, it was full of action and adventure.

The book starts when Penryn and her family are on the move, because their condo has traces of gang infiltration. In the midst of their escape, Pen sees a glorious angel with white wings attacked by other angels.  The white winged angel’s wings are cut off but he still fights on. Pen and her family are spotted by one of the angels Pen panics and is conflicted on what to do so she picks up his discarded sword and throws it at him. Due to her rash decisions, one of the angels takes Pen’s sister, Paige from the wheelchair Pen is pushing her in.  Pen’s insane mother runs off.
Pen is left alone with the injured angel (Raffe), she then takes Raffe and bandages him up and demands to know where they took Paige. Their journey begins there to try and find Paige and to get Raffe his wings back.

*SPOILERS*

Pen's determination to bring her sister back is truly admirable. I thought it was ironic how Pagie lost her legs and Raffe lost his wings and by the end of the book they gain their legs and wings back but not in the way they thought they would.
I loved Pen's mother! I can definitely see her having a much bigger role in the future books, she gives the book an eerie yet humorous vibe.

“Penryn? Who are you talking to?” My mother sounds almost frantic now.
“Just my own personal demon, Mom. Don’t worry. He’s just a little weakling.”
Weak or not, we both know he could have killed me if that’s what he wanted. I won’t give him the satisfaction of knowing I was scared, though.
“Oh.” She sounds calm suddenly, as if that explained everything. “Okay. Don’t underestimate them. And don’t make them promises you can’t keep.” I can tell by her fading voice as she says this that she’s reassured and walking away.
The baffled look the angel shoots at the door makes me chuckle. He glances my way, giving me a you’re-weirder-than-your-mom look.”

Raffe has this sarcastic dry attitude that brings humor to the book. I love the parts when Pen and Raffe are bickering (i.e most of the book)

“I never kid about my warrior demigod status." (Raffe)

"Oh. My. God." I (Penryn) lower my voice, having forgotten to whisper. "You are nothing but a bird with an attitude. Okay, so you have a few muscles, I’ll grant you that. But you know, a bird is nothing but a barely evolved lizard. That’s what you are.”

The end of the book had me on my toes the whole time. The relationship between Penryn and Raffe is so unique, because its slow and not rushed but we definitely see the relationship development throughout the book and by the end we can see that they have feelings for each other. The angel scorpions were quite creepy if I do say so myself. When Pen got stung while Raffe was trying to fight to get his wings back, I loved the raw emotion that Raffe showed towards Penryn. I am really curious as to what will happen to Raffe's new wings and if he will get used to them or get his old wings back.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to people who enjoy post-appocalptic reads, I love the character and relationship development in this book I also loved the humor and wit.

I would give this book a 95%.

Welcome!!!

Hello! Welcome to "My midnight reads", where i talk about all things books! I am a book enthusiast and a full time high school student. I have always loved reading, my love for reading started when I was in 1st grade and read all of the Junie B. Jones books (which was quite an accomplishment if I do say so myself). Today, some of my favorite genres are contemporary, fantasy, dystopian and sci-fi. Once in a while i will read a classic here and there (mainly for school).

Besides reading I really enjoy photography and film. I love editing pictures and videos.
The reason i started this book blog was because reading has always been a big part of my life and I love talking and discussing books with other people and being inspired to read other books, this ultimately lead me to starting my very own book blog. Reading is like entering a whole other world far from reality and I hope to show other people how amazing it can be.

Thank you!
